10 Day Explore Ireland Adventure

Our driver will pick you up at your accommodation and take you to our stables. On arrival Mr. McKinley and members of the Bespoke Equestrian Ireland (BEI) team will greet you with a warm, genuine welcome before heading to the barn for a stable tour and to meet the team of horses.

After selecting a horse, and a riding assessment, you will spend 4/5 hours riding out into the wilderness of the North Antrim Hills with its heather clad slopes, looking down upon the verdant green pastures below, with panoramic views over the North Coast and 5 counties of Ireland. 

You will stop at the glass sided mountain side cabin, high in the hills, where a picture-perfect picnic or traditional afternoon tea awaits you. Enjoy a sumptuous lunch, while absorbing magnificent views of the Northern Irish countryside. 

We will be riding past the old peat banks that were once the traditional source of fuel in Ireland for generations and can stop and do some peat cutting with the old traditional peat spades. Get a few memorable photographs before making our way back to the stables.

After your initial day’s riding you will be collected and taken to your accommodation, where your hosts will help to organise dinner options for you in the local town. After that, it’s time to get a good night’s sleep and be ready for what tomorrow has in store.

Overnight: County Antrim Coast

Enjoy a hearty full Irish breakfast before setting off to begin your adventures. Your driver will transport you to the iconic Downhill beach where your first glimpse of Downhill beach offers panoramic views of the ocean and landscape, where miles of open sand, waterfalls and iconic views await. En route, we will pass the ancient trees of Mussendun before the journey continues past the ruins of Downhill House which was Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol’s, 18th century home.

Marvel at the architecture and expanse of the flamboyant Georgian ruins before your gaze is taken by the lonely Mussenden Temple, regally perched 120-feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Inspired by the Roman Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Rome, Mussenden Temple was used as a summer library for Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol.

It is time to meet your trusty stead again at the entrance to the beach. Downhill beach is best known for its magnificent mountain backdrop, cliff scenery and views across to Donegal. As we enter the beach, we can stop at the foot of the cliff where Mussendun Temple is located for an ideal picture opportunity before taking a swift canter or gallop across miles of flat, open beach crossing the river on to Benone Strand, with miles more sand beach to enjoy.  As we pull up at the end of the beach, we stretch our legs, stop at the washrooms and give the horses a rest before riding back across the golden sands, through sand dunes, stopping to view the waterfalls cascading of the majestic cliffs of Binevenagh Mountain and enjoying some time in the spray of the Atlantic.

Upon leaving Downhill Beach we will ride through Downhill Forest to the site of St Mary’s Church. Surrounded by local legend it is rumoured that this Church was home to a magical cow which could produce unlimited amounts of milk as long as it was kept by the right person. You’ll also hear some of the complexity of Irish history and why this Catholic church was destroyed after the Siege of Derry by retreating forces loyal to the Catholic King James II. 

Our ride finishes back at Downhill, where we load the horses and enjoy a relaxing lunch after an exhilarating ride. 

After lunch, you will be taken for a guided tour of this beautiful area, starting off with Mussenden Temple before travelling on to some off the beaten track locations such as St Aidan’s Church nestled at the foot of the mountains overlooking Lough Foyle. St Aidan’s is the site of a Holy well and is also the burial site of St Colombus, soil from his grave is well recognised as having healing properties for skin complaints. Next, you’ll make your way to Gortmore viewing point, taking in superb 360 degree views over the North West of Ireland, before taking in further viewing points as you follow the coastline back to your accommodation for the night. 

Overnight: County Antrim Coast

Today, we will start our ride at Whiterocks beach, so named because of the white chalk cliffs and caverns set back from the water’s edge. The west end of the strand is adjacent to the seaside town of Portrush and backs on to one of the top grass links golf courses in the world, the famous Royal Portrush, host to the British Open which is part of the 2019 Masters’ Competition. Whiterocks beach also looks out over the Skerries (a small group of islands off the coast of Portrush) and the iconic Dunluce Castle, Donegal and the Western Isles of Scotland. 

While riding here, there is an opportunity to ride along the edge of this famous golf course which was used for the 148th Open Championship in 2019. Stop for photographs, and get photographed with your partners if they happen to be playing on this fabulous course.

Enjoy some beautiful trots, canters and time in the sea in the most beautiful of surroundings at this picturesque beach. After conquering the sands of Whiterocks, it is time to storm the 13th Century Castle ruins at Dunluce! Ride along the epic coast line leading us to Dunluce Castle before taking a tour of the castle and learning some of its intriguing history (especially the bit about the kitchen & staff plunging into the sea during a storm in 1639!).

While here, we will have some snacks before riding on to the tiny harbour town of Portballintrae en route to the Giant’s Causeway.

As we ride through the quaint coastal village of Portballintrae, we will begin to see the rugged headlands surrounding the Giant’s Causeway. We will cross the River Bush, on its way to meet the Atlantic after being used to create the world famous Old Bushmills Whiskey. Next, it’s time to enjoy our second beach of the day! Breathe in the fresh sea air as you trot and canter across the sand and in the gentle swell of the magnificent Irish Sea. The ride continues as you follow an old tram trail across sand dunes and past the stately Runkerry House before arriving at Northern Ireland’s most famous UNESCO world heritage site, The Giant’s Causeway. 

This unique world heritage site is steeped in Irish mythology and is one of the most iconic, beloved features of Ireland’s Causeway Coast. Luckily, it is also our destination for today’s ride. Here we will load up the horses and finish off our adventure with a relaxing meal in the Causeway Hotel. After the meal, make the most of the opportunity to visit the famous hexagonal rock formation and allow the memories of 3 unforgettable days of riding with Bespoke Equestrian Ireland, your enduring new connection with trusted steed and the genuine bonds forged with the people you have met along the way to permeate your thoughts. 

Now, as one inspiriting chapter in your journey ends, the seeds of another begin to take root. It is time to bid a fond farewell to the Causeway Coast and unearth the other spellbinding secrets the Emerald Isle has to offer. To this end, we will make our way to Derry City, where the next leg of our adventure begins. 

 The oldest walled city in Ireland, Derry has a breathtaking history and is the Causeway Coast’s undisputed haven for arts and music. Take advantage of the opportunity to explore this historic city, walk ancient walls steeped in the memories of Derry’s harrowing past and feel these rich stories emanating from the heart of the city itself.  You’ll swiftly discover why Derry has witnessed a metamorphosis from a besieged and divisive city into the cultural phenomenon of contemporary times. Explore the vibrant pubs and restaurants and witness the beautiful murals for which the city is famed and you’ll swiftly discover exactly why Derry was voted the inaugural European City of Culture.

Overnight: Derry

Today, we take a break from the saddle, capitalising on the opportunity to rest our legs while we allow our drivers to introduce us to the raw, untouched splendour of Ireland’s West Coast. Sit back and embark on a journey along the rugged, ethereal landscapes of the Wild Atlantic Way. Every step of our journey, meandering towards the enchanting seaside town of Westport, brings us closer to an exciting new riding adventure.  

Throughout your journey, your guide will regale you with the wealth of unique history and rich tapestry of culture of the region, illustrating what makes this unspoiled area of Ireland so inimitable. Today, your fate is in your own hands, promising endless possibilities. Together with your guide, you will chart a personalised path to Westport that echoes the very essence of what you’d like to do. 

You can stroll through the expanses of Glenveagh National Park, a crucial sanctuary that teems with a treasure trove of protected wildlife and flora, nurtured by the many waterways and lakes permeating the land. The seemingly incongruous Victorian Castle nestled amongst this flourishing life serves to enhance this stunning natural wonderland.

You may opt to embark on a pilgrimage to the summit of the majestic Croagh Patrick, a mountain with a great deal of religious significance in Ireland. Saint Patrick, our illustrious patron saint, once spent 40 days fasting  on this mountain and praying that God might save the Irish people. Some believe that it is into the foothills of this mountain that Saint Patrick drove the snakes when he banished them from Irish shores. You can join the 40,000 pilgrims who climb Croagh Patrick annually, many of whom opt to do so barefoot as penance.

“Cast a cold eye on life, on death, horseman, pass by.” This cryptic phrase marks the grave of the enigmatic, early twentieth century Irish poet, W.B. Yeats. Although a true consensus as to the meaning of Yeats’ self-penned epitaph remains elusive, inviting a personal interpretation from the reader, it seems to beckon all equestrians to pay homage making it an essential stop on any horseback riding journey through the region.

However you decide to focus your time today, the natural beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way is unparalleled. Prepare to encounter a plethora of mesmerising vistas; looming cliff lines connecting the land to the vast, mysterious Atlantic Ocean, quaint patchworks of fields that have sustained local communities for generations and the serene, tranquil beauty of the mountains and glens. 

These are the landscapes that have inspired the world-renowned Irish writers, poets and musicians for generations, so remember to bring your camera to ensure that the memories last a lifetime! 

Overnight: Westport

Now, rejuvenated after yesterday’s leisurely respite, it is time to rekindle our passion for riding and get acquainted with a new, eager, equine companion. Making our way to the remote, Silver Strand beach, a morning of exhilaration awaits. Locally known by its ancient moniker, Thallabawn, the beach is nestled at the foothills of the majestic Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s preeminent pilgrimage site. 

Ironically, Silver Strand is famous for the iridescent golden hues of its sand, which will sparkle underfoot as you canter along this stretch of  the Atlantic Coastline. Feel the wind whip your hair, the invigorating splash of the cool ocean spray against your skin and let a smile dance upon your lips during this remarkable ride, designed by one of Ireland’s most prominent equestrian minds, Michael Lennon.

After dismounting, we will say goodbye to our loyal steeds and make our way towards the awe-inspiring Connemara region. Nestled in the heart of County Galway, Connemara is one of Ireland’s primary ‘Gaeltacht regions’ – areas where the Gaelic tongue is still spoken fluently. Here, the Irish language is often on the lips of the local community who have preserved their native tongue through centuries of persecution. This citadel of Irish culture remains a stronghold of Irish dance, music and arts and the local community remain steadfast guardians of the proud heritage of the Irish people. 

At the heart of this region lies Connemara National Park, a haven for a diverse array of flora and fauna rarely seen in Ireland. Connemara is replete with verdant forests, rugged mountain ranges and vast, untouched peatlands, which truly capture the essence of  wild, ancient Ireland. The National Park is the proud home of a herd of Connemara ponies which freely roam the area which they have inhabited for centuries.

It is in Connemara, where the natural beauty and Irish culture seamlessly blend together, where we can visit the distinguished Kylemore Abbey. Romantically, this esteemed Benedictine Abbey was constructed by an English Doctor after he and his wife visited Connemara during their honeymoon and immediately fell in love with the area. As you explore the untamed Connemara wilderness, and interact with the warm, welcoming people, you will mirror the emotional journey of that young couple falling deeply in love with this unmistakable jewel of Ireland.

We will make our way to Galway city for the night. Galway City offers a delightful blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and scenic beauty. Known for its lively arts scene, the city boasts charming cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and a bustling Latin Quarter filled with shops, cafes, and pubs. Strolling along the River Corrib, visitors can enjoy stunning views, while landmarks like Eyre Square and the Spanish Arch add to the city’s charm. Galway is also renowned for its friendly atmosphere, making it a perfect destination to experience authentic Irish hospitality.

Overnight: Galway

Today, we depart the hustle and bustle of Galway City and make our way towards one of Ireland’s most famous natural wonders, Clare’s Cliffs of Moher. This astonishing, 9 mile stretch of rugged cliff lines provides an unparalleled vantage point from which to witness the raw, unrestrained power of the Atlantic Ocean. 

As are millions of intrepid visitors each year, you’ll be entranced by the tumultuous waves, which can reach 60 feet in height, crashing inexorably against the towering cliffs and showcasing the formidable force of the untamed seas. From this unique vantage point, you may catch  a glimpse of the ancient Aran Islands, which stand as lonely sentinels 14 miles off the coast. Stand amidst the incredible legions of 30,000 seabirds which call the Cliffs of Moher home and you’ll feel an unmistakable connection to the primal, wild nature of Ireland.

You will follow the coastline through the towns and villages of County Clare as you travel southwards towards Killimer Town to take the ferry across the River Shannon into County Kerry and pass through County Limerick en route to Kerry’s jewel – Killarney – with its majestic backdrop of mountains, and views of the lakes of its National Park.

This vibrant town is one of the most bustling, cosmopolitan districts on the Emerald Isle, a hub for music, dance and traditional fun.  Killarney also has a longstanding affinity with horses and you can explore the magnificent Killarney National Park from the  back of a horse drawn ‘Jaunting Car’. This traditional mode of transport offers a glimpse into Killarney’s charming past.

Overnight: Killarney

Today, our penultimate riding adventure begins in the shadows of Seefinn Mountain, whose peak towers over the beautiful town of Glenbeigh. The mountainous expanses encircle Glenbeigh, feeding two rivers – Behy and Caragh – which flank the charming town. These natural springs nourish the surrounding countryside creating a flourishing ecosystem that serves as the backdrop of today’s adventure. 

The journey commences with a time honoured passage through the Windy Gap, an 8-mile pass rising precariously through the mountains. It gifts you with spectacular views that have captivated riders for generations and possesses an ethereal beauty. 

Passing the cool, shimmering waters of Caragh Lake, this route takes a meandering path, offering panoramic views of the distant MacGillicuddy Reeks. You will look down over an ancient peat-bog, a relic of the Ice Age whose fuel has warmed Kerry homes for generations.

After a tantalising glimpse at the beautiful beaches awaiting us during tomorrow’s ride, we’ll dismount at the stables in Glenbeigh.

As our day of riding draws to a close, we descend upon the picturesque, tranquil village of Glenbeigh. This quaint, rustic town can be explored at your leisure. An idyllic location in which to spend a restorative evening, Glenbeigh is a prominent location in Irish mythology – a focal point in the journey of Oisin, as he made his way to Tir na Og – The Land of Eternal Youth – on his stunning white horse. A natural paradise, many a visitor has been enthralled by the diverse array of lakes, rivers and beaches that have gained this village the title – “The Jewel of The Ring of Kerry”, 

Overnight: Glenbeigh

Our final day of riding has arrived, and this day is designed to be a special commemoration of your time here. Yesterday, as we crested the hills of The Windy Gap, we were given with a brief sighting of one of the most magnificent beaches in Ireland, Rossbeigh, one of the finest expanses of golden sand in all of Ireland, a 4.3 mile expanse of pristine sands. Under the watchful peak of Seefin Mountain, you’ll traverse this untouched paradise, nestled between Glenbeigh and the Dingle Peninsula. Connecting the charming  towns of Glenbeigh and Dingle, Rossbeigh is a doorway to the transcendent beauty of the renowned Ring of Kerry. 

After cantering amidst the invigorating waves of the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll feel your affinity with Ireland truly awaken. Savour each precious moment, for this should be the poignant climax of your time spent in Ireland. As you dismount for the final time, reflect on the journey you have made, the friendships you’ve forged and the memories  you’ve gained. Say your fond farewell to the horse that has borne you for the past two days and enjoy one final evening on the Emerald Isle.

 To spend the evening you can choose between the idyllic peacefulness of Glenbeigh, or the lively spirit of Killarney, connecting with the side of Ireland that most appeals to you at the moment.

It’s finally time to make your way back to Dublin (or Belfast) and, as you have your own private driver,  feel free to incorporate any visits or stops that you would like to make. You may also add on extra days if you wish  and our itinerary planning team will happily assist.
